Neuroplasticity – the science that Processing Speed, Attention, Memory, visual and auditory processing skills, logic, and reasoning are brain skills that can be worked on and improved. Often referred to as Executive Functioning these are the building blocks of higher-level learning.
Occupational Therapy
Occupational Therapists support students with activities related to stages of development and learning as well as selfcare, life skills and occupation. The following developmental skills play a key role in academic functions and performance.
- Visual perception is a key component of reading and writing. VP is how the brain takes in and interprets what the eyes see.
- Ocular motor skills refer to how the eyes work together. How the muscles control the eyes to move them and follow stimuli.
- Fine motor skills- hand coordination, strength, and dexterity. Hand dominance and mixed dominance would fall under this area of treatment.
- Sensory Regulation- the sensory system takes in information from our environment. Sensory systems can be over or under-responsive, which highly impacts one’s ability to function in everyday life.
- Motor Planning or praxis- the ability to organize and approach tasks in an organized, planned, and purposeful approach.
- Visual –Motor coordination- how the eyes and hands work together for learning and play.
